Reflective Journal #7: Specific Purpose.

Now we are looking forward to our final challenge of the term. Hopefully by now, we have had several opportunities to see what people do well, what makes good speeches and presentations, and reflect on our own strengths and weaknesses.

We have analyzed what makes good speakers, and what makes speeches work as either informative or persuasive. Personally speaking as one of your audience members, I am heartened by the commitment of so many of you to the course, and to your own development through each challenge, even under the difficult circumstances that we are in. Thank you sincerely for this.

As always, the first and very important step to high quality speaking is identifying a specific purpose. For this final group presentation, you have to decide on your purpose, to inform or persuade. And then clearly the next question is: Persuade Or Inform... about what?

The same considerations are at play: Who is your audience? What will be relevant for them? What do you need to do to achieve your purpose?

For this post, this is a first chance to propose a topic and purpose. With this post, you can also see what other groups are planning to do, so you want to differentiate yourselves from others to be unique and memorable. And remember the theme: Living in Uncertain Times.

Please introduce your topic idea. Generally, what is the idea? Explain it briefly, and then state your Specific PurposeWe want to inform / persuade our audience that...

Only 1 group member needs to make this post, but please include all group members' ID numbers in the post. Please also include your Section #. I will be responding to each post to give preliminary feedback. Of course groups can change their minds about topic ideas after this post, but it is best to make this decision as early as possible. Should we educate young citizens about politics in Thailand?
    - to make sure that’s our youth citizen will have enough knowledge for the election and further events that involves with the politics.

    1. This is interesting. It seems like the answer should absolutely be "yes." Right? So on one hand, it seems to me that this is not debatable. But in the Thai context, maybe it is. I would want to know why anyone would disagree with educating young people about democracy. You will need to explain the context.

Linkage to the theme: Living in uncertain time-as children are in the technological area, they are exposed to technology early as 6 years old. The future improvement in technology is allowing children to have access to more devices.
Although it may be useful for parents to use it, as we don’t know the full potential of technology, it’s important to have a distinction in this uncertain times

Our general purpose is to persuade. Our idea talks about how children these day own their personal devices such as iPad, however the use of technology could abused a child’s physically and mentally.

For example, when a kid cries, an iPad is handed. We will argue, it’s not the right thing to do.

Therefore, our specific purpose is to persuade our audience that pre-teen should not have right to use technology.

    1. I think you're on your way. I'm curious who your target audience is for this topic. Is this a topic for parents? Is this about the best "policy" for parenting children?

Specific purpose: To persuade the audience that children should prioritise job satisfaction over salary.

In the Thailand context, most of the time, children need to choose whether what they like or what’s best for them based on traditional belief i.g. parents’ advice. In the continuously changing world, everything is uncertain. Jobs come and go. We believe learning what we like is better at the end of the day.

    1. This works well, and it is highly relevant to your audience. For many of your classmates, this is a very confusing issue. We want to follow our passions, but at the same time, family expectations and other pressures make money a priority.

    Topic idea:
During the pandemic, it has become clear that economies of countries like Thailand that rely heavily on tourism, are not as resilient as originally thought. Businesses and individuals that depend on tourism to make a living have been impacted heavily. Beaches are deserted, hotels lack residents and markets like Chatuchak have become ghost towns. Following the pandemic, Thailand could rebuild their economy to what it once was, but perhaps there is potential for something much greater. We believe that by shifting the economy towards one that is less dependent on tourism and strengthening it in other ways, Thailand can use the pandemic as an opportunity to grow, become more self-reliant, and to restructure its tourism industry.

    Specific purpose:
To persuade our audience that Thailand should shift towards an economy that is less reliant on tourism.

    Topic: Asian hate crime

In the past decades, more and more Asian Americans have been attacked even though they have nothing to do with the attacker but mind their own business. This crime has drastically increases throughout the States and one of the shocking cases is done to an old Thai man leading him to death. This highly leads our awareness to this issue and we want to let everyone knows why it happen, how it affects Asians living in America and America and what has been done to address this issue and how we can help raise awareness.

Specific purpose: To inform audiences about the reason behind those crimes, impacts towards Asian American and American’s economy and the solution that has been made to address this issue.

    1. This is an interesting topic. And an alarming development. The challenge for you is the giving your audience a "reason to listen." You will need to establish relevance to your audience regarding what it is happening in America. Work to answer this question.

Topic: Should libraries be replaced with unlimited access to e-books?

E-books are easily accessible and low budget. E-book access is completely at our fingertips, we could search, choose, buy, and read whenever and wherever we want. They are available 24/7, easily searchable by readers, and provide an easy way to download without any struggle.

However, books and libraries are always a pleasing experience. A library is a place where anytime we can go to read a vast collection of books in various fields. It is a completely beautiful experience to go to a library, feel the texture of each book, smell them, the occasional feeling of bookmarking a book, and many more are never irreplaceable. For many of us, books are also a form of decoration. Having a small library spot with a wonderful collection is always eye-pleasing.

Therefore, our purpose is to persuade the audience that libraries are a beautiful experience to feel, with existing books to recall the old memories of reading them traditionally.

    1. This is very interesting. A unique topic choice, and I suppose it is a perspective that many in your audience disagrees. Personally, as a lover of libraries, I am excited by your topic, but I wonder if focusing on the "beautiful experience" is going to be the most practical way to approach this. You may not only focus on the experience, but also on more practical matters related to learning, development, and productivity too.

    Topic Idea:
Our lives can be accidents and deaths within seconds. What is both convenient and detrimental are cars. There are more and more reckless drivers in Thailand. Road accidents rates tend to go up dramatically every year. It is important we look at the process of getting a driver's license. Getting a driver’s license in Thailand is very easy and anyone can get it without really trying. Because of this, the drivers are less experienced and less prepared for mishaps that can occur when driving. Cars can be very dangerous when not properly used. Therefore regulations and the process of getting a license should be more strict. The law is a duty of the government that needs to be improved, but respectful responsibility on the road should be the norm of everyone.

    Specific purpose
To persuade term audience, the driver license test should be more strict and it can reduce the amount of accidents that occurred from careless driving.

Specific Purpose: To persuade the audience that people should consume local market goods rather than products from convenience store (7-11)

Most people in Thailand tend to prefer convenience store products over local market goods. These days, we can obviously see that the most common convenience store which most of Thai people prefer is 7-11. Existence of 7-11 is causing a low income crisis to local businesses and local people.

COVID-19 is a mistake made by the Chinese government. The covid virus is spreading for a variety of reasons, and it is affecting economies, societies, and public health in countries all over the world.
What should we do if this issue arises again in the future? What the current pandemic taught us.

In the contemporaly world, robotic will play a major role in the world. This might come with the new alternative method of medication. It is robotics treatment on human which insert robot parts instead of normal human’s organism to cure people, but who knows that it can affect our life and our worlds in the future.

specific purpose : We want to persuade audiences about the harm of the robotic treatment on human in terms of the bioethics.

    1. I think this works, but I highly recommend that you be specific. Is there a particular robotic part? A particular procedure? A particular harm? Because I expect that the ethics change depending on the procedure. For example, if someone is using technology as a cochlear implant to enable hearing... this may be different from using a robotic limbs like what we see in science fiction movies.

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in every aspect of daily life. Many people are facing financial problems, and are not able to access very basic necessities such as health care, meals, or even happiness. This uncertain event illustrates the value of money and presents that it’s the one and only solution to this issue.

Specific purpose is to persuade our audiences to believe that money is everything during the pandemic of covid19.

With the ongoing pandemic, many things are disrupted. Teaching and going out is restricted and plans are put on hold or may end. University students are often asked about their plans for the future. After graduating, what will you do? Do you have a plan? It's a wise idea to make a plan for your future, however, we should not strictly stick to it since it could cause more stress to students that already have a lot on their plate. That is why we should not be too hard on ourselves and be flexible with our plans.

Specific purpose: To persuade the audience that we should not stress too much with our plans and we should be flexible.

Topic: Human responses toward the pandemic

Humans have been fighting with the unexpected diseases since historical time until nowadays. Nature is truly enormous as we don’t know everything about it. We only notice it’s existence by the time that the infection has begun. Some happened in a continent and some had spread throughout the world. Each time, we approached the issues differently according to the era, when the amount of knowledge and cultural behavior are opposite to the contemporary period. In our speech, we are going to inform the changes in the ways that humans in the past and the present reacted toward the pandemics.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I expect that this can work, but I imagine that some narrowing is necessary. For example, you're right that there have been several instances of epidemics, and new viruses introduced into the population, but there may be few examples of truly global pandemics (because it is only recently that so many people travel so far and so easily). Work to narrow your focus.
