In this week's post, we are reviewing the Lucas tutorials from Weeks 7 & 8 posted by your classmates. As we prepare for our individual persuasive speeches, it is important that we keep coming back to Lucas to help us understand what makes good persuasive speaking.
Remember that the unique challenge of persuasive speaking is that we must influence or change the minds of our audience. This means we must know who they are, what they believe, and what kind of argument and evidence will serve to challenge their points of view.
For this blog post, I want you to view 2 of your classmates' tutorial videos. From each, reflect on one key learning you gain that will benefit the preparation of your persuasive speech. Please take these tutorials to heart, as they truly matter to your work.
Please make your first post by Sunday night, and then respond to 2 other posts by next week.
As always, please remember to include your ID# and Section # in your posts. Aj. M

ReplyDeleteMeanings of words (ICE)
She introduced the definition of word and then provide 2 types of meaning. First, Denotative is a dictionary definition. This used to describe object, people, and ideas etc. Second, connotative is more varieble, figurative, and subjective. Moreover, connotative gives intensity and emotional power.
Question of policy (Mako)
Question of policy talks about whether you should take action on a certain thing or you should not. There are 2 types of speeches. First, Passive agreement is used when you want the listener agree with you. Second, immediate action used when a speaker want audiences to take actions immediately. When you try to persuade someone, you need to be specific. 3 steps required for question of policy: need, plan, practicality. 4 organization of speeches: problem-solution, problem-cause-solution, comparative advantages, and Manroe's Motivated speech (we want immediate actions).
6380479 SEC 4
DeleteWhen you mentioned how connotative gives intensity and emotional power, I strongly agree. When speakers use this technique, it keeps you engaged and it is powerful.
In the manor’s motivated speech, it is true that we want immediate actions. I believe speeches like this can be impactful when the speaker explains their point with great supporting evidence. Because it could move people, if supporting a cause or fighting against it, you have the power to be a leader.

DeleteMeaning of Words
Language is a crucial tool for speakers as it is used for delivering messages to the audience. Deciding an appropriate type of words is important because it helps the speakers to achieve their goal of the speech including informing and persuading the listeners.

ReplyDeleteAppeals to Emotion - Phone
There are 3 ways of generating emotional appeal which is using emotional language, developing vivid examples, and speaking with sincerity and conviction. However, providing too much emotional language can undermine its effect as well. Moreover, the speakers should use emotional appeal ethically. Therefore, I think this video about appealing to emotion is very useful for public speaking, especially for persuasive speech because the audience will be more persuaded if they also get emotionally involved in the topic.
Using Language Clearly - Dao
Language is one of the most important things to consider when having a speech. It can either make a successful and effective speech or an unsuccessful speech that causes misinterpretation and misunderstanding. After watching this video I learned how to use language more clearly and effectively. For example, using familiar words, choosing concrete words, and eliminating clutter. Moreover, I will use these techniques during my persuasive speech as well.
6380479 SEC 4
DeleteI think the video explained by phone really does show that emotions are useful. I also believe, when you are able to get the listener’s heart and attention, it makes the speech more effective.
I do believe and agree with your second point on using language clearly. I think the language use is cruicial because a highly educated person who is knowledgable could not make as a strong persuasive speech compared to someone who has a great use of language who is less educated. When the listeners doesn’t comprehend, then the speech won’t be effective. Therefore, the use of language clearly does make the speech effective.
ID:6380205 Sec4
DeleteI agree with you that appealing to emotion is very useful in making a speech. If we are able to use the language in an emotional way, then the audience will attract more to what we are saying. They will feel the impact of the issues we try to persuade and this will make them start thinking and get involved with the topic.
ID: 6380621 Section: 12
DeleteI agree with your comment on appeals to emotions. When there is an emotional bond formed between the audience and the speech content, speakers will more likely be able to maintain the their attention through out the entire speech. I also agree that the goals of a speech, whether it is persuasive or informative, should be ethically sound.
ReplyDelete6380479 SEC 4
The video by Dao titled Using language clearly explains in the first minute of the importance, which she mentioned, “Crucial to listeners are that they cannot reread or rehear what you have said”. I think this learning and mindset can help me gain awareness to be my listener’s perspective to think about the words I am using are appropriate and not too technical or specialized and hard to understand. Therefore, I could apply this importance in mind when explaining my topic to my audiences.
The video by Pimploy titled Using language vividly mentions the use of simile could help paint a picture better. As we are taking things that could look like other to act as it is, we could really help listeners to imagine what it is that we want them to picture. I believe this could help my quality of speech and it will benefit my speech to be better considering the audience will know what to imagine. Therefore, creating a vivid picture in their minds.
ID:6380205 Sec4
DeleteTo determine how well is our speech, it will depend on the language we used. If we didn't make it clear enough, then the speech can be misinterpreted. I will also try to avoid using the technical term as you mentioned as it is an easy way to make the audience get confused about our ideas.
In addition, I agree with you that using simile will help to improve the quality of the speech because it helps the listeners to see a clear picture. But, I also want to recommend you to use repetition of words as well, so that the words you repeated will be stuck in their mind, making them remember the points better.
6380087 section 12
DeleteWord choice and language are very important in public speaking. In the same time, they are very challenge and hard. I will take time to think and check about my use of word too!
I strongly agree that simile could help the audience to imagine. It could enhance the understanding of the audience as well as enhance our speech to be interesting.
I believe both types of language use are useful in different context, however, I strongly believe that the speech that include both vivid and clear are the most efficient as it give a clear meaning as well as fluent in the beauty of language. It is good to know the meaning and see the picture that the speaker try to portray at the same time therefore using both in the speech would be a good option

ReplyDeleteReasoning
According to Prite video, I learned that there are 5 types of reasoning, which include reasoning from specific instances, reasoning from principle, causal reasoning, analogical reasoning, and fallacies. However, the most interesting topic for me is about fallacies. Fallacies are when we make an error in reasoning, and as a speaker, we need to be very careful because what we speak will create an impact on the listeners and they may get the wrong information from us. Therefore, when I prepare my speech, I need to make sure that I have sufficient evidence before making any conclusion to prevent the use of hasty generalization as I think it is the easiest fallacies that people can make.
Questions of Policy (Mako)
When we decide to use questions of policy, we need to make sure that we have analyzed and gone through these 3 basic issues including the need, the plan, and practicality. Stating the need will help to gain attention from the audience. If the need is not relevant, then the audience will lose interest easily. Also, when we talk about practicality, we need to make sure that what we persuade is practical and is going to work because if our plan is not working, then there is no point for the audience to listen. Therefore, when I plan for my outline, I need to make sure that I have included these 3 basic issues and explain them clearly to gain trust and make them be aware of the issues I want to talk about.
6380087 section12
DeleteI agree about having enough information and evidence will be able to prevent generalisation. However, I would like to suggest you another way is to use precise language. It could use to prevent generalisation in our speech too!
Your observation about question of policy is very useful to me! I will carefully think of these three basic issue in my preparation too! :)
6380114 sec 4
DeleteIn the first video, I agree that fallacy is a major problem that everyone is trying to avoid. If there is any logical fallacy happened in the speech, it can create a negative impact on the entire speech. I also want to prepare my evidence carefully before giving a speech.
In the second video, I also agree that stating the need of the change is very crucial. People will not pay attention if they don't see the importance of such topics. I will make sure my audience get the urgency of the change in my speech as well.
6380594 sec 4
DeleteAs I do a guestion of policy for my persuasive speech. This topic is really helpful.
When I was outlining I'm makng sure that I did analyze the 3 basics issues before making my speech. I will keep in mind that if the topic is nor related or important to the audiences, they will have no reason to listen to my speech.

ReplyDeleteAppeal to emotion - Nony
This video made me notice the importance of word choices. It could make a huge impact on the listener’s emotion. I mostly prepare myself full of information before doing the speech, never considering the word choice. Now, I will use her suggestions and think more about the emotional language. I also learn more tips of appealing to emotion like using vivid examples. This is very useful for me since I plan to conduct a persuasive speech on the question of policy.
Using language appropriately - Gun
Gun’s video provides me with a great reminder for my persuasive preparation. As he explained the appropriateness in different aspects, it reminds me to look back to my speech and check for any possible inappropriate point. It reminds me to make sure to analyse my audience, choosing the topic or provide a content that would be appropriate to them. It makes me aware of using languages. He also provides a useful tip that I will definitely use is to listen to the effective speaker.

Inclusive Language
It is important to be aware of the language we use when we address people and are unaware of who they are. We should not stereotype and patronize people based on their gender, race, religion, or other factors. The same goes for stereotyping jobs and social roles by gender. After watching this tutorial video, it made me realized the importance of using inclusive language. By using inclusive language, it prevents us from using words that would exclude a certain group of people. Thus, I will keep this in mind and apply it in my speech.
Using Language Clearly
When delivering a speech to the audience, the audience is unable to replay your speech. They cannot read or hear your speech again, which is why it is crucial for speakers to use language clearly and avoid misunderstandings. This could be done by the tips given in the tutorial video. We should use words that we are familiar with, and avoid using abstract words and cluttering our words. I tend to speak abstractly and this could be unclear for my audience. I will apply what I’ve learned to my speech.
ID: 6380621 Section: 12
DeleteI agree with your comment on using language clearly. It is important to use words that we are familiar with, which is a great advice particularly in reminding us not to use overly technical terms. Otherwise, it will leave the audience confused and distracted, which could potentially lower the overall impact the speaker intends to create.
6380114 sec 4
DeleteI agree with your comments on both videos. Firstly, I also believe that using inclusive language can exclude a certain group of people so everyone including me should avoid it as much as possible. Creating misunderstandings and conflicts is not what I want to happen during my speech for sure. Secondly, I think you are right that audience cannot replay the speech so delivering the message clearly is one of the most important elements in any speech. Some words like abstract words should be avoided since it can increase difficulty in understanding the key message of the speech.
ID: 6380202 Section: 07
DeleteI totally agree with you that we have to be aware of the language we use and avoid words that could offend a particular group of people. Inclusive language helps us with those points and be more careful. I also agree that the audience can’t replay the speech, therefore, we should make the language clear enough for them to understand in the first place. Using concrete words would help the audience to easily catch up with the speech.
6380318 sec07
DeleteI also think the same way that using language clearly is crucial for persuasive speech. Making my speech shorts and focus on the main point can be effective as well. However, I need to make sure that the words I used is easy to understand and clear to the audiences.
I totally agree that we have to use language clearly not just for the audience but also the speaker themselves because before we can inform others we have to be able to explain it in a simple and clear way. After we have the understanding then we can inform others.

ReplyDeleteMeanings of word - Be
There are 2 types of meanings of word that could be use in a speech which are denotation and connotation. After watched this video it helps me with choosing which type of words in which type speech. For denotation is basically the direct meanings of the words and more objective uses for more academic speech. For connotative is use for more subjective topic and if the speaker expect to get emotions or feelings from the audience.
The psychology of persuasion - Tang
In persuasive the speaker have to focus on the audience attitudes, values and beliefs. We need to keep in mind that the audience does not always have to agree with the speakers to consider persuasive but have the audience rethink about what they used to believe could also be persuasive.
ID: 6380202 Section: 07
DeleteI’m with you on that. If the speakers want intense reactions from the audience, they should use emotional words in the speech. And for denotative meaning, academic speaking would suit well. To separate both uses would help the speaker to choose the language flawlessly. And I couldn’t agree more that as a speaker, we have to present both points of view and give rational reasons to support the arguments. For the speaker to persuade the audience, we also have to make a strong statement for our position.

ReplyDeleteQuestion of Policy by Gam
The question of policy is about gaining passive agreement and immediate action. First, gaining Passive agreement is to try to make the audience agree with you. Second, gaining immediate action means that the speaker wants to motivate the audience to action like exercise or blood donation. Therefore, we must have these 3 steps in question of policy: need, plan, and practicality. We must show that our topic has a need for listeners, explain the plan and solution, and show them that plan actually works. In my outline, I need to make sure that I can make efficient plans and solutions for credibility to the audiences.
Appeal to emotion by Nony
She has a speech about the emotion which can make the audiences feel the same way as her. This video tells us many things to improve the interest in the speech like having the emotional appeal to attract the listeners or developing vivid examples for making a credibility. Moreover, the speaker must speak with sincerity and conviction through the words, voice, expression, and gestures. I can use this knowledge to make my speech more interesting and attractive.
6380119 sec12
DeleteI have the same perspective as you when I watched the video on the question of policy. I have thought the same about whether my outline has a good question of policy because I think it is important to include some in order to make my speech sound persuasive.
ID: 6380616 Section 12
DeleteYes, developing vivid examples will not be effective in my speech unless the speaker feels the emotion themselves and communicate it by speaking with sincerity and conviction. I would like to also mention that another crucial idea I took away from this tutorial video was that emotional appeals can be effective if they are not manipulative and are used to further an honest message. We need to establish a firm foundation of facts and logic and avoid substituting emotional appeal for evidence and reasoning.

ReplyDeleteQuestions of Value - Baitoey
One key learning I’ve gained from this video is that questions of value are based on the speaker’s belief of what is moral or immoral, fair or unfair or proper or improper. With that being said, the speaker must establish their standards for their statement, then show how the claim measures up against those standards. Before watching this video, I was quite confused by the differences between questions of value and questions of policy. However, I’ve come to a clearer understanding of their main distinctions, and will apply this knowledge in to the writing of my final speech outline.
Questions of Policy - Gam
A key point I didn’t know prior to watching this video was that questions of policy usually include the word ‘should’. For instance, ‘Should electoral college be abolished ?’. Moreover, there are 2 goals to choose when preparing for a question of policy speech, which are to either gain passive agreement or to gain immediate action. Persuasive speeches to gain passive agreement are when the speaker is trying to get the audience to agree that a certain policy is desirable, but not necessarily encouraging the audience to do anything to enact the policy (as opposed to the goal of gaining immediate action). With that being said, I’ve come to realise that I should be focusing precisely towards 1 goal, which is to gain passive agreement from the audience in the case of my persuasive speech.
6380119 sec12
DeleteI agree with how you summarize the point of the video. I thought that it could be important to include something that have value in moral because some people considered it as top priority.
ID 6380100 Sec 12
DeleteI agree. The speaker has to set a standard for their statement. As a speaker, we have to do a research on both good and bad side to be able to have as much knowledge as possible to be able to make up our decision and try to convince others. Which comes down to morality and fairness of the speech at the end. As a speaker, we have to keep that when we are planning the speech.
ID: 6380616 Section 12
DeleteI couldn't pinpoint the difference between the question for sure as well and I think both tutorial videos explained it clearly in terms of examples. Persuasive speeches on questions of value imply certain actions, but they are not a call to action, and the question of policy is when we are urging that something should or should not be done. Now that we can identify the different types of Persuasive Speeches, it will help us especially in the process of developing an outline in future speeches.

ReplyDeleteReasoning Prite
From that video, I learned that there are 5 types of reasoning. Reasoning fron specific instance, reasoning from priciple, casual reasoning, analogical reasoning, and fallacies. I learned alot about logical fallacies from this chapter. It is important that speaker should not make an logical fallecy. As it could reduce the credibility of the speacker. Moreover, logical fallacies could me result in misunderstanding or false information for the audience.
Appeal to emotion Phone
I learned that in order to create emotional appeals there are three methods that I could use emotional language, vivid example, sincerity and conviction. Using emotional appealscan make it easier to persuad audiences as they have their have emotion attach to the topic. However, I should use emotional appeal ethicallly. I should balance between emotion and reasoning in order to remain the truth and being honest to the audience.

Question of facts is one types of the persuasive speech which focus on true or false things. A question of fact is similar to informative speech but informative speech has to be unbiased. While the persuasive speech have to be biased toward one aspect. In the question of fact we don't need to get the right answer but we should persuade our audience to think the same way.
Using language clearly- Ploy
Using language clearly is very important in your speech, we need to make the speech short and easy to understand for the audience because we only do a speech once and we can't change the words that we already said. ReplyDeleteUsing Language Vividly
From the video, I have learned two methods of using language clearly including imaginary and rhythm. First, using imagination to create concrete, simile, and metaphor is a creative way to convey a message. Giving an audience detailed examples and stories with descriptive language doesn’t only allows them to understand the idea that the speakers present, but also draws their attention to receiving information in a unique way. Second, creating a rhythm from parallelism, repetition, alliteration, and antithesis is another way to make your idea stronger and entertaining. By playing with the words, your audience will notice the important detail that they should consider and sense the flow of the speech.
Question of Value
From the video, I have learned that the question of value is one of the persuasive speech topics which seek whether the idea is good or bad. It represents the beneficial consequences of value and contains a support which leads to the results. Furthermore, it also has a strong association with our actions after the end of the speech. The points that distinguish questions of value from the other are that it doesn’t subject right or wrong and should or shouldn’t. It tends to involve our morals and beliefs.

ReplyDeleteQuestion of Policy-Mako
I am personally interested in this topic since my upcoming persuasive speech is about question of policy. I have learned many things since she pointed out many important points and elements that must be included in the speech. For example, the reason behind the persuasion should be clearly delivered. I neglected this point while working on my outline as I already thought it was important for me. I forgot about the audience and how they can relate to it. Therefore, I will add this helpful advice on my speech so that my audience can understand the significance of my topic and pay attention more.
Inclusive Language-Ming
I chose this video since I believed it would become very handy for my topic. My topic is quite sensitive which is talking about a minority group of people. I might unintentionally face inclusive language. What I have learned in this video is very beneficial to my topic as he gave out couple heads up for me. For example, he talked about misleading words on racism and sexism. Sometimes, these words pop up naturally without any bad intentions, I still need to be very careful when I talk to the public.

ReplyDeleteMeaning of words - Be
Be presented 2 types of words which are denotative and connotative. Denotative meaning is literal meaning of word or phrase that you could see in the dictionary, it’s giving a definition. It is more precise and objective, and it could describe an object, place, person, event, and idea. However, the connotation is meaning that triggers and relates to emotion by a word. It’s more figurative and subjective, and connotative meaning can arouse the feeling of the listeners. It gives more power and intensity when you use it. How to decide whether to use either denotative or connotative meaning depends on the occasion, the audience, and purpose. But in the speech, using words that are emotional can be really useful in terms of persuading and informing.
Appealing to emotion - Jet
There are 3 ways to generating emotional appeals. Using emotional words or phrases can be really useful to make the audience engaging with the speech, but it should not be used too much as they will lose focus on the speech. In order to grab the audience’s attention, providing vivid examples can touch the audience’s feelings which could make your speech unforgettable.
Moreover, being sincere can draw attention from the audience because they can see by the way speakers speak and express themselves. Importantly, the emotional appeal should be used ethically in the right form of question which is question of values and question of policy.

Delete6380583
I just learn that we shouldn’t use too much of emotional appeal too. Also, I personally think speech designed for question of fact would require more connotative meanings.
6380002, Section 7
DeleteIt is a really good point made that too much emotional appeal shouldn't be used. I've always thought how speaker's connect and invoke an emotional reaction in their audience is the most important tool that they can use eg. political campaigns, etc. But this is too, too much emotion can sway you away from the central idea and audiences lose focus. In a way, what's more important is how you use emotional appeal and can you do it successfully while things like audience, context, situation, etc. should also come into play. (eg. MLK)
6380436 Sec07
DeleteI agree with you that in persuasive speech the use of connotative word can be useful as it can makes your audience easier fall along with you than using the word that more objective. But we need to be careful as in the next point that we can't really use the emotional words all the time it's depend on the situation, context, etc.

ReplyDeleteUsing evidence:
It is very important to include evidence when giving a persuasive speech because it will weight your point and make it more convincing. Some types of evidence are examples, statistics, and testimonies. It is clear that the more credibility your speech is, the more persuasive it will be. Evidence are separated into 4: specific evidence, novel evidence, credible evidence, and clear evidence. Eventhough this is quite a universal logic, but sometime I forgot to think about giving quality evidence.
Question of policy:
This is a type of questions where the question included the cause and consequences. The key word in this type of question is “should” as this is a suggesting word. The goal is to persuade not just listen along. There are 3 basic issue which are need, plan, and practicality. If you can point out one of these 3 from your speech then your speech would probably be more extreme in persuasion. I think it is important because this is what people fear, the consequences, so they might be hesitate more when they hear speeches with question of policy related to their life.

ReplyDeleteMeaning of Words
There are two types of meanings of words. One is Denotative meaning and the other is connotative. Denotative meaning is the meaning of words that directly come from the dictionary. However, connotative meaning is based on how we emotionally define the words. I’ve heard both of them before but I'm not sure of their meaning. Now I’ve learned that if I want to put emotions in my speech, I should choose connotative words to get intense reactions from the audience.
Inclusive language
Inclusive language basically means words that we need to be careful with due to the exclusion of some particular group of people. We should avoid words that could offend people based on stereotypes or prejudice. Especially when it comes to sensitive content such as gender roles, we may use some words that exclude some particular group of people without being aware. So I would be more careful next time not to stereotype other people.

ReplyDeleteThe psychology of persuasion - Ken
There are three significant keys of the psychology of persuasion. The first one is the challenge of persuasive speaking. These points clarify about the differences of audiences such as their attitude, belief, value, and view. Secondly, how the listener processes persuasive messages. It is due with the mental dialog. Thirdly, the target audiences. To know the target audiences, we have to research, survey, and ask questions. All of these points are the keys that can improve the speech. The speech is not only due to speaker, but it also due to audiences such as their background.
Meaning of the word - First
After watching the video, I learned that a denotative word is like a normal word that we use to describe something such as object, person, and place. It can also be called the dictionary definition. Another word is connotative. The definition of this type of word is to imply or suggest something. Furthermore, the connotative word is much more powerful than the denotative word as it is more intense and emotional, so in the speech, using the connotative to gather attention from audiences is better than denotative which is the simple one.

Appeal to emotion - Nony
An emotional appeal is intended to cause the audience to feel a certain way so that they will be convinced by the speaker. Emotional appeals can manifest in a number of ways. Metaphors, stories, and passionate delivery are all emotional appeals because their effectiveness lies not only in the words, but in the emotions they evoke in the audience. Emotional appeals can be a powerful rhetorical element of a persuasive speech. They are an attempt to make the audience feel something, and in the process, be persuaded by the speech. A crowd that is feeling something is much more likely to be engaged, give consideration to your arguments, and remember the speech.
Questions of policy - Gam
From Gam’s presentation, I have learned that actually there are two goals when it comes to preparing questions of policy speech: to gain passive agreement and to gain immediate action. One focus of persuasive speaking is questions of policy, which advocates a change from the status, or the way things are today. There is a "should", or at least an implied "should", in the thesis statement. The speaker wants the plan proposed by the speech to become policy.

However, it is inappropriate to use emotional appeal to the persuasive speech on a question of facts, and we should not use our emotion in the evidence.

Appealing to emotions - Jet
From Jet's tutorial video on appealing to emotions, I learned that I should use vivid examples that engage listeners and emotional language to strike certain chords in our audience. It is also important to speak ethically. Emotional appeal should be used only when it is appropriate to the situation, and for a good cause. Finally, you can also appeal to your audience's emotions by speaking with sincerity, which they will be able to pick up on quite easily.
Psychology of persuasion - Tang
From Tang's tutorial video on the psychology of persuasion, I learned that while giving a persuasive speech, all aspects of you will be assessed. It's not just your delivery, it's how credible you are perceived to be, the language you use, the logic in your reasoning, and the emotional appeal that you use. That's what makes it so difficult. However, the aim of the speech is not to convert all members of the audience. It's just to plant a seed of doubt in their minds. So, while you may not be able to convince everyone to agree with you, by taking note of the values and concerns of your audience and preparing accordingly, you will definitely be able to persuade some.

Psychology of Persuasion:
Persuading people is not easy. People will not change their opinions easily. How audience acts can give a hint of what they are thinking and if they agree with you or not. There will be audience members that will not agree with your point. Just making people who are skeptical/disagree, reconsider their opinions is a good sign of a good persuasion speech. The mentality is similar to just casually speaking, just not interacting out loud. Adjusting a speech for the audience is preferred as well.
Using Language Clearly:
Speeches should be easy to understanding. Hard words should sometimes be replaced be a well-known/more common words that are easier to understand and stable words that does not have multiple/complex meaning. Having the audience understand your speech is very important so they can follow your points. Clutter should also be removed to get an easier to understand and be straight to the point. Sentences that are unnecessary and too long are not as easy to understand as simple sentences that goes straight to the point. Words should be narrowed down to be specific as to make them easier to understand.

Since the listening is not like reading, the mistake can be made if we hear the words that have similar in sound. With this mistake, it can make audience misunderstood or confusing. Moreover, some word we use can be misinterpret since there are more than one meaning.

ReplyDeleteAppeals to Emotions By Nony. In this tutorial, she explains that we should know how to enhance the message of our persuasive speeches by generating emotional appeal and making sure that our goals are ethically sound. I can apply this knowledge to my personal speech by developing vivid, richly textured examples. This will not be effective in my speech unless I feel the emotion myself and communicate it by speaking with sincerity and conviction. Emotional appeal can also sometimes be used inappropriately in order to gain something from the audience members so when we make emotional appeals, we should be guided by a firm ethical rudder which is very important when I’m doing my speech on questions of value.
Question of Values By Baitoey. One crucial idea that I would like to point out is that questions of value not only involve matters of fact, but it also demands value judgments based on a person’s beliefs about what is right or wrong, moral or immoral, fair or unfair, etc. It is in fact a question about the worth, rightness, morality, and so forth of an idea or action. When speaking about a question of value, you must also justify your opinion by establishing standards for your value judgment. Thus, The most common approach is to devote your first main point to establishing the standards for your value judgment and your second main point to applying those standards to the subject of your speech. By keeping this in mind my persuasive speeches on questions of value will be organized, topically.

DeleteI agree with both your comments on appeal to emotions and question of value. In terms of appeal to emotions, an individual can make his persuasive speech strong by appealing to the audience emotions. This is because audience can make more connection to the topic that's being discussed on a personal level and hence have higher engagement throughout the presentation. In terms of question of value, It is somewhat similar to appealing to emotion as through facts and policy not everyone may connect to a personal level. But with the idea of question of value, most people tend to make connections as to how their culture has shaped them, and if it's a good or bad thing. Question of value is also a great guiding tool for a presenter to showcase his idea towards a cultural perspective which can make the audience more curious.

ReplyDeleteUsing Evidence
In this video, the use of evidence is brilliantly explained as well as the benefits and credibility that you gain from using evidences. Apart from explaining how to use evidences with examples from different situations, the tip section also really helped. One thing that stood out was to use evidence that is beyond the listener's knowledge, and this is really good because many people including myself, have put evidences in just for the sake of it and it could serve me better in the future to find interesting things to cite.
Question of Fact
Different types of 'questions of fact' were explained well in this video and they are questions that can be answered, those which don't have a clear and defined answer and questions that are still up for debate. But, I was intrigued in the part about the differences between persuasive speeches about a fact as opposed to informative speeches as this may apply to my speeches. With this in mind, the topical organization pattern that is recommended will definitely be used in my speech.

ReplyDeleteQuestion of facts:
Various types of "question of facts" were explained in the video which gave clear understanding about how persuasion can be done through facts. I also learned the importance of facts and data in any kind of speech and the key role they play in order to get the message across. Moreover I realized that the use of facts in informative, and personal speech can be way different from persuasive speech. In informative or personal speech we present data unbiasedly in order to state a point with an aim to inform the audience. However in a persuasive speech, we manipulate the facts in the favor of our topic in order to influence the audience to believe in us.
Using language vividly:
From this video I learned how can we make our speech more interesting by using vivid insights. These includes tools such as imagery, rhyme, simile, metaphor and other various literary devices. Through this tools one individuals can make their speech more vivid and easier to remember. Rhyme and rhythm can create a tone or sound which is more appealing and hence audience pays more attention.
