Reflective Journal #1: Personal Speaking for an Audience.

In this first reflective journal blog post, we are reflecting on the speech performances of 2 unique speakers, Prumsodun Ok and Nong Poonsukwatthana. These are two wonderful examples of personal speeches.

What is a Personal speech? Well... it is what it sounds like; it is personal. It starts with you, a personal experience, characteristic, or memory, and it tells a story about it. It aims to connect the audience with you as a human being with real-life experiences. BUT, the thing is, it isn't only about you. If a personal speech is only personal, then the audience loses its reason to listen. The point of your personal story, in order to be a good speech, must have relevance to the listener. I think the two examples we are reviewing this week do just that very effectively.

For this reflection, I would like you to view both speeches. Pay close attention, not only to the content and what they say, but also to who they are and how they present themselves. Don't feel pressure to write about everything you see, but describe 1-2 observations for each speaker, and consider the following questions:

What makes them effective as speakers? Even though they are personal speeches, what makes them relevant to a wider audience?

Your post is due by next class. Remember to include you ID# and your SECTION # in your post. I look forward to reading your thoughts. Aj. M

For the first speaker, she uses her facial expression to help her communicates her feeling to listeners. In my opinion, it makes her look more confidence. Moreover, she usually moves her body on the stage to make herself be more relaxing. Although not speaking English fluently, she has interesting story about herself to share to the listeners, which may inspired many people, and a good lesson for everyone.
For the second speaker, he speaks more fluently and speaks with dynamic and harmony that make the story more interesting to listen. He has interaction with listeners and he uses many body language. He also uses his facial expression to convey his feeling. Adding the facts and similes also make his story more attractive.

As of the first speaker known as Nong Poonsukwattana, does a good job sharing her story despite not being fluent in English. She does this by connecting her past life to her present life in a unique flow which not only connects to the audience logically but also emotionally. She notified the audience what she learned from her experience time to time and gave a good message in the end which the audience can take home and think about. Despite not being fluent in English, she never felt embarrassed or hurried to share her story. Instead she took her time, walked a bit on the stage to gather her confidence and kept a smile to make her speech more engaging.

The second speaker known as Prumsodun Ok, also did a great job sharing his story. This was because he was fluent in English so he had no lack of confidence which made his performance effective overall. He was not only sharing his story but also making the audience engage with it by making them do the hand gesture of “cycle of life” and by making them stand up based on different categories such as skin tone, language, glasses etc. In addition he was using his dance throughout his speech to give live examples of how the art of dance plays an important role in his life as well as his culture. This for me as an audience was a very unique and new way of communication which overall kept me engaged and made his speech memorable.

Nong Poonsukwattana: First give, then receive

I really enjoyed Nong Poonsukwattana’s speech. As a speaker, she was expressive and courageous. Even though her English was not as strong as Prumsodun Ok’s, her confidence in speaking and enthusiasm more than made up for it. In a way, you can even see that she adheres to her titular philosophy of giving before receiving during the talk. Utilizing her great sense of humor and aura of happiness, she makes her audience feel joyful and comfortable, the same way she does with her customers. As to what makes it relevant to a wider audience, Nong’s story, although tragic, is an extremely inspirational one. One of the points that she highlighted in her speech was that no matter how bad things get, an opportunity is bound to present itself. No matter how trapped you feel, one day you will be free; free to live your life as you wish and to follow your dreams.

Prumsodun Ok: The magic of Khmer classical dance

I was very moved by Prumsodun Ok’s talk. His masterful and poetic use of language did an excellent job of painting a vivid picture of Khmer dance’s rich history. His composure was calm and gentle, yet simultaneously intense and passionate. I think he did a very good job at emphasizing his points by actively including the audience in his speech. With language as fluid and as eloquent as the movements he performed, he relayed a very powerful and evocative message: beauty is a liberation from suffering. Even when faced with genocide, death and destruction, beauty prevails. I believe the message he was trying to convey is one that matters to all our lives: that beauty lies in diversity.

Nong speaks with confidence and that attribute alone is the main driving force behind her speech. What makes this “personal” speech work is that she is passionate about the subject and exudes a level or sincerity in her emotion when communicating to the audience. This is truly about her hardship and hard work and it's not going to be easy for anyone especially with someone who starts from scratch. Her accent does not affect the message of her speech, her perfectly timed jokes and careful arrangement of words gives them special weight and prominence. Even though they are personal speeches, they are relevant to a wider audience because people can relate and truly understand her stories, because the best presentations don't feel like presentations but they are simply stories told by people with captivating experiences. She shared her interesting experiences and background, connecting us with her which is why this speech performance seems more like listening to a friend, a passionate friend who wants you to follow your passion.

Prumsodun, on the other hand, has a soft spoken voice and his movements are graceful and gentle. Similar to Nong’s speech, He introduces himself and his cultural background. He is confident to display his identity and his craft, sharing his view on the importance of cherishing and supporting artists, he details the history of Khmer classical dance and its current revival in the form of a dance-talk hybrid. I remember studying Thai masked dance or “Khon” which is very similar to Khmer classical dance so I recognized some of his gestures, because his speech are insightful it provides depth and beauty of the art which means a wider group of audience can retain that information as all religions, culture, and beliefs deserve the same amount of respect, even if they are different from your own.

First give, then receive, a speech by Nong Poonsukwattana was one of the speech that inspired every single listener to believe in themselves. As she said a very memorable phrases in the end "no matter how bad the situation you are in, believe in yourself, believe that you can do it and more importantly do it". Throughout her speech, Nong's characteristic was she always speaking with a determination and courage which helps her gain the audiences attention throughout her speech. Nong started her speech briefing about her own background living a substandard life in Bangkok until she moved to United States seeking for new life alone. Even though her English accent was not perfect, that was not the problem at all as she used various kind of jokes in a perfect timing which leads to a better connection between her and the audiences that also indicate the relevant to a wider audiences. In general, this speech by Nong is effective because the emotion that she portrayed throughout the speech is remarkable. She started from the scratch and now an owner of a restaurant in Portland, United States. She has show every audiences that you can achieve whatever you want just believe in yourself and do it.

The magic of Khmer classical dance a speech by Prumsodun Ok was briefly talking about the background of Khmer classical dance and how its related to the Khmer Rouge and also the present state of the Khmer classical dance. Prumsodun stared the talk very straight forward by addressing the historical aspects in details of the Khmer classical dance. Then he started to make an engagement with the audiences by inviting them to do the four hand gestures which are tree, leave, flower, and fruit. Those four gestures are what is called the cycle of life. Right after that he started to show and prove to the audiences that these four gestures are used to create a whole entire language that the dancers use to express themselves. Then he performed a various types of Khmer classical dance gestures and simultaneously speaking to the audiences telling them what are the meaning of each gestures. He then indicated the lost and damage that the county's has suffered during Khmer Rouge. Nonetheless, he simply used the word beauty to emphasize and uplift the lost and damage that been happening during Khmer Rouge. His speech that portrayed all the aspects of a rich cultures of Khmer classical dance which can easily be accessible to all the audiences. Moreover during the speech, he has invited the audiences to participate with him whether it is a hand gestures or standing up activity. This has proven that his speech is relevant to a wider audiences. In general, his speech is very effective as he has been able to achieved his purpose of telling the rich history of Khmer classical dancing and its revived after the Khmer Rough.

According to the first speech from Nong Poonsukwatthana about her life experience. I can feel from her speech that she was excited to be on the stage but I love her spirit, all her words represent her experience and her emotions in every moment, which made me pay my all attention to listen to her speech. Even though her English wasn’t fluently or perfectly, the listeners could understand what she wanted to say by her facial expressions and voices. Also, she used many tones throughout her speech to make it sound more interesting. I think her speech would encourage other beginners as an inspiration to those who want to start doing something new that makes it BIG than other could think of.

Next, in Prumsodun Ok’s speech, he uses a gentle and soft voice to tell a Khmer dance’s story. He also adding some physical movements to tell the story or the dance language to the audience. Another technique he used is to make the audiences participate in his talk, like asking them to follow his hand movements or stand up. Moreover, Prumsodun has good English skill, so he can explain what he wanted to say correctly and fluently and these make the audiences deeply understand the story.

    Nong
The first speaker's speech gives off many different emotions to the audience. She not only talked about the sad part of her life, but also TMI such as the perfume she bought from South Korea to entertain the people, creating a better environment and connection between the speaker and the audience. At first, she speaks with a nervous voice, but I see how confident she is to speak English even though English is not her mother tongue. The pitch of her voice also has up and down, she didn't speak in monotone which reduces boredom. Moreover, in the end, she gives a motivational speech that can relate to all the people such as people shouldn't give up even though the journey is tough, just keep doing and they might see an unexpected result like her. All of this clearly shows how effective the speaker is.

    Prumsodun
The second speaker delivered a speech about the history of Khmer dance, telling how Khmer's dancers turned into slaves and died. He has a very soft and calm voice and knows when to pause while making his speech. He showed how body language indicates a specific meaning (the cycle of life) such as trees, flowers etc. He also makes the audience engage in what he is talking about by making them follow his gestures and asking them to stand up based on the categories he asked. Moreover, he turned his head left and right to make eye contact with the audience creating trust for the listeners. Before he ended his speech, he mentioned the word 'beauty' where I believe that it leaves a message for the audience to think that everything has its own beauty.

First I watched Nong's speech, which was an inspiring story. Her speech was full of her attitude towards life and everything she had experienced from beginning to end. Although her story isn't pretty, she uses humor and a smile to show the audience that she is still trying to enjoy life. Her English skills are not as fluent, but her pronunciation and command of words are enough to let the audience understand her story, and the pauses seem to become a constant expression of emotion.

Compared with Nong, Prumsodun's speech is extremely smooth and clear. His speech was as smooth and graceful as a classical dance, and his poetic language was enough for the audience to appreciate the charm of the dance. On this basis, his interaction with the audience further stimulated the audience's interest and understanding of Khmer classical dance. Finally, his definition of beauty makes the audience think, because the speaker's point of view becomes the comparison of everyone's own ideas

During the speech, Poonsukwattana emotionally delivered her message to the audience. Her eyes and her voice tone varied according to each part of her life story. I could feel that she was trying to individually talk with us and this point caught my attention. It was different from formal speech as she called her listeners as ‘you’ to follow along her story and feel what she experienced. On the other side, Prumsodun precisely and deliberately provided his talk in detail from where it began and became nowadays. He gradually built a fundamental setting and ensured that everyone was on the same page. Not to mention that he also asked for participants to follow his movement as well as indicated some connections between the audience’s characteristics and his idea of living. All in all, both of their personal speeches were filled with human emotion. As one's life was desperate, there always was a glimpse of hope which happened to some part in everyone's experience. This was where the speakers and the listeners related to each other in my opinion.

Frist speaker is Nong. I think she describes about her story life. She uses things to show to audiences such as blush on and perfume. She speaks with feeling and her experience. She talks very clearly. The language sound like a little bit Thai accent, but she can express the easy word to attack their audiences. She has confident to speak with people that look at her only. During her speech, she has eyes contact with her audiences and use a picture to make it easy to understand. She put some quote at the end of her speech.
Another speaker is Prumsodun. He talks about dance. He speaks very smooth and easy to understand. He gives some example to audiences, and He makes activity that audiences can do with him. It is a good example to clear pressure. He have a movement to familiar with the state and makes he has more confident. He use a movement to interact with audience. His eyes are contact with every audience.

The first speaker, Nong Poonsukwattana, speaks with confidence even though her English is not fluent. She tells her background such as how the environment she lived in Thailand, and how she started her life in the USA which relates to the audiences who are local people. This makes it more interesting for the audience to listen to. While she is speaking, she portrays facial expressions and controls her voice very well in order to attract the audience, for example, when she talks about the suffered time of her life, she sounds and seems nervous, or when she gives the motivation, she seems powerful. Importantly, she is a good speaker because she motivates and gives the audience inspiration to plan big before giving up.

Prumsudon Ok, he speaks like a native speaker because he is Khmer-American, so he is confident to share his story. The tone he uses for telling the story is very calm and soothe. His body language and eye contact are very good and natural. Also, he not only talks about his story, but also the majority of Cambodians. Providing the history of Khmer’s ancient dance being destroyed and how people suffer in Cambodia such as being killed can make the audience understand to what is the point of the topic. His unique way of telling the story that he shows, the cycle of life by gesturing, and the way that he speaks about the privilege audience has. It can make the audience realize that there are many people out there that suffering in society.

First give, then receive by Nong Poonsukwattana
Her speech express many emotions to audiences both of face and story. In the part which is about her sad story, she try to add a joke to reduce while she is speaking with depressed emotion. Also, she often smile to change to relax and do not make the audiences feel more depressed. Moreover, she motivates them in the last part of her speech that everyone must believe in yourself even in the worst situation. She show everybody that trying the best to do is not pointless. In one day, it will be successful.

The magic of Khmer classical dance by Prumsodun Ok
His speech is quite different from Nong Poonsukwattana in many ways. First difference is a tone. His tone is very calm, clear, and smooth throughout the speech. Moreover, he shows the culture dance during his speech which as smooth as his tone and he always eye contact to the audiences to interact with them. In the story part, a first part is about his culture and meaning of the dance for presenting the important culture. Then, he tells the audiences about the suffering of Khmer people after losing the dance to make them know his topic. Also, he tells the beauty is not considering the race or strength. Everyone is beautiful oneself.

From my perspective, The first speaker is Nong Poonsukwatthana. Although her English is not that good, she used a powerful word to persuade audiences. She looked nervous on the stage, but she can continue speaking because she has been preparing the information before. She talked about her family background, and it was quite interesting to audiences. She used gestures to assist her language to express her feelings as well.
Another speaker who is Prumsodun Ok. He looks like a professional, and his clothing is unique, so it might catch the listener's attention. His language, voice, and tone are very fluent. He put a rhythm in his words, and there was an interval between sentences. He described the story with his hand gestures, and audiences tried to conform to him. This showed that they are interested in the speaker’s story.

The first video, which is the Nong Poonsukwattana
She is done with a great job with her confident no matter other may say that there are pronunciation issue or nervous. She did a great speech. She attracts the audience and keeps on spot with her emotions no matter if there are some mistakes or not, but she made it and the result is fascinating.

    The "Prumsodun Ok"
This speech is quite more academic. He speaks fluently and uses body language to describe the topic he talks about. His speech is quiet, clime and silent, but he fixes this issue by giving the audiences some activities with him. By the way, he is quite organized well in his speech. He shows his emotion on the stage much, but he released his emotion from his voice and sound; additionally, it led the audience to follow with him.

The first speaker was Nong Poonsukwattana. The speech that she gave was about her own life. She mentioned that she was not good at English at first because no one seemed to understand what she is trying to communicate. Then, she learned English from being a waitress in Thai restaurants in Oregon. She has come a long way from her start. Now, she owns a business in the US. Although her English is not very fluent at the beginning of the talk, she starts talking with high energy and confidence. Also, she was a bit nervous, which she showed by her gestures. She kept squeezing her hands, standing wobbly, and struggle in some parts. I enjoy listening to her talk because the talk was flow and easy to listen. By watching her speech, I found that she is a very ambitious and smiley lady. She smiles at all times during the speech, and Her energy never drops. Her stage excitement reduced bit by bit during speaking, so she was very flowing in the second half of the speech.

The second speaker, Prumsodun Ok, talked about Cambodian dancing and diversities. He spoke smoothly and fluently as a native speaker. His voice is very soft, which made me felt like I was brought into another world. Also, his talk was like a musical without music but speaking instead with the all beautiful movements he performed. His move was stunning and matched with the speech very well. He was also speaking with a confident gesture as a professional speaker, and he had very great interaction with his audiences which he made the do some movement with him. I also enjoy watching his performance, and I did not want it to end.

    -First, give, then receive.
Nong Poonsukwattana, the owner of Gao man gai food truck. I would say that she is one of the bravest women in this world, I believe. Although she does not have a British accent or American accent, she still makes the show interesting with her rhythm while speaking and her confidence. She starts the speech with her background and gradually dig deeper into her family and how what she has been through the years. At this point, I felt like her stories are not boring at all like how she can be that brave after being through a lot of tough times and I should pay more attention to this speech. During the speech, she lost a lot of eye contact with the audience and was shaking, which made her nervous, but that did not seem to distract the audience from her. I would say that while she was talking about something quite downhearted, she is going to laugh with it so that the audiences do not feel bad for her. Her speech was kind of to cheer people up. It contains a bunch of lessons and some quotes that the audience can use in their real life and it might work well for the audience who works as customer service staff.
    -Art of Khmer classical dance
Prumsodun Ok, the dancer who has got Khmer- American blood. There is no doubt why he is fluent in English but that was not the main point. Focusing on his speech, there are a lot of feelings that happened to me, as an audience, which can not even be expressed in words and it is kind of having a battle inside my heart. He mentioned Khmer background and it made me quite depressed. to be very honest I paused his talk for a while because the way he talks, and his tone makes me think back to how suffering they are and the difficulty to be the 10 percent who has to continue the dance that has been passing along generations. He attracts the audiences by using gestures and asks them to make the gesture along with him and also give the meaning of it. I can't even get distracted from anything while watching his show. He makes the audiences ask in their mind what he is talking about and what is going to happen next. His facial expressions and tone of voice completely work well. I would use the word mysterious to express how his voice makes me feel.

To start, the first speech from Nong Poonsukwattana.
It is a speech that inspires her audiences to be brave and believe in themselves. Even though she is not fluent in English, she uses body language and facial expressions to send emotions to audiences. Her words are filled with feeling and power, and it makes the audience interest in her speech. The story about her life is not a pretty lovely life story. It contained sadness and heartache. However, she uses various kinds of jokes at the perfect time to cheer up audiences and bring them back from the sadness. Her sense of humor, emotion, and story keeps audiences interested in her speech. In the end, she comes up with a quote that so inspiring and ends her speech beautifully.

The second speech is from Prumsodun Ok
He is talking about Khmer dance, the meaning of it, and the importance of it in the culture of Cambodia. The voice that he is using is calm and soothing throughout his speech. He uses a lot of gestures and body movements to visualize what he speaks to audiences. He always has eye contact with his audiences. He links what he has spoken to his audience which makes them better go into his speech. He always interacts with his audiences asks questions to them, makes them stand up, and asks them to dance with him to keeps his audience engaged and interest in his story.

    Nong Poonsukwatthan
    - Her genuineness, facial expression, speaking style, and story itself make her effective as a speaker. Although she struggled with the language at some points, her genuineness made the audience overlook all the mistakes she made. Also, the way she told the story by gathering the information little by little from each event in her life to support her main story. Moreover, she had interaction with the audience and knew how to lift the mood. // She made the audience feel relevant to her by mentioned about common/simple things which are familiar to both herself and the audience. She did not just mention it, but she also included her personal experiences in it. Additionally, her speaking style and facial expression also helped her to develop closeness between her and the audience.

    Prumsodun Ok
    - He talked about the Khmer dance which is an unfamiliar topic to the audience. However, he gradually and simply explained it verbally and also use his body for better understanding. For example, when he explained the curves in Khmer dance, he also showed them how it looks like instead of just telling them and let them imagine by themselves. As a result of doing this, it also increases his credibility by allowing the audience to know/see that he is not just someone, but is a person who knows and truly understands what he’s talking about. Furthermore, he explained this complex topic in a simple way with a slow flow/rhythm of speaking. As a result, it allowed the audience to gradually understand and absorb the information being said. Together with his movement, it created a calm atmosphere, help heighten his calmness, and how delicate this Khmer dance is. // When talking about culture or explain it to other people, it’s quite hard to get their attention or to make them relate to the speaker. However, he let the audience participate in what he’s talking about and that makes the audience to not feel left out. For example, he invited the audience to do the four primary hand gestures together with him while he was explaining its meaning. Therefore, all of these together make him effective as a speaker and connect with the audience.

For the first speaker, Mrs. Poonsukwattana, expressing her feelings throughout her body language and facial expressions. While telling the story she uses her body language to go along with her speech naturally, but not only that, she also tells the story with her facial expressions which we can see that she really meant what she said. The more important point is overcoming her fear of speaking one another language. While speaking it is obvious that her voice is shaking, however, she decided to keep on speaking which I would say the effort that she put into this made an incredible outcome. The story that she talked about might seem personal but it could relate to anyone because the point is not about her story, it emphasizes the overcoming of the struggles in her life and the belief that she had for herself. By that she meant to tell everybody to believe in themselves no matter how hard it would be.

The story by Mr. Prumsodun Ok is quite interesting from the beginning because the tone of his voice is very soft and persuasive. I would say the techniques when he sparks slowly and softly is one of the factors that made his speech attractive. It made the audience feel calm and slowly imagined along with his dances that he introduced. To add on, he tried to encourage the audience to engage with his speech by making them stand by asking them questions which made the speech not boring. He informs the audience that beauty could be anything and more importantly the diversity itself makes things beautiful.

The first video is a speech that was given by Nong Poonsukwattana. In my opinion, she is one of the good speakers as she can catch the audience’s attention since the beginning that she came up onto the stage. Although her English accent is not good as the native speakers, she can deliver a clear speech with confidence. She was quite a bit nervous at the beginning, but she can overcome it. Her speech is not boring as she always shows some pictures and makes some jokes while she was speaking.

The second speaker is Prumsodun OK. His speech was about the Khmer dance. His tone of voice did a great job to express his emotion. He speaks very calmly and clearly. He emphasizes the important part and shows the examples of the dance after explaining the meaning. He also gives examples of Kmer words and a quote and with a clear explanation. It is very interesting that he asks the audience some questions and asks them to do the Khmer dance with him, so they are not just sitting and listening.

First speaker is from Nong Poonsukwattana. Her speech shows the audience how to be brave and try new things. She showing her facial expression to shows audience how she feel at that time. She try to express her story with sometime of joke to make the audience get interest and listen to her even though her english is not that good. She try to express the audience not to give up since the beginning and start doing thing when opportunities come through.
The second speech is Prumsodun Ok. In my opinion I think his speech is really good. He used his gestures , voice control to control audience interest and make the audience to did the gestures follow him. He also interact to audience by ask audience a question and let them stand up.

The speech of Nong Poonsukwatthana effectively attracts the audience with those powerful emotions. Nong presented her tough life and how she became successful. Her voice is loud and clear. She used simple words to make the audience easily catch up and understand her story. Her speech did impact the audience in not giving up on life. She encouraged the audience to believe in themselves that they can become whatever they wish to. Nong also leaves a message that people don’t have to be capable of doing everything. If you are good with only one thing, that’s enough. Her words did inspire the audience, including me.

The speech of Prumsodun Ok was very smooth. He talks about Khmer classical dance and used body language as an example to attract the audience, which makes his speech more interesting. He presented beauty in Khmer classical dance and how valuable the dance is. His speech and performance are really impressive and make the audience feel appreciated. He successfully influenced the Khmer classical dance, and more people will appreciate the dance like him.

The first speech was given by Nong Poonskwattana. In this speech, we can see that her English might not be the best but her braveness and her confident is over the line, which brings attention from the audience. She use her extraordinary experience that not so many people in that hall have the same as her and make is more interesting by giving emotion and gesture. I believe that the massage that she try to give it to audiences is they need to believe in themselves and not giving up so easily. This speech is one if the good example on how to bring out your confident and across your own fear. For the second speech by Prumsodun Ok. From my point of view, he has made a very beautifully speech. His voice, tone and language are perfectly presented. I love the small activity that he gives to the audience, with this activity it pull more attention form listeners ang. make it more interesting.

For the first speaker or Nong, she puts confidents and emotions in her speech which good speakers should do. Even though her English was not perfect, the way she talked promoted her story to become men more interesting. Also, she linked her idea of not being perfect and kept developing things because life has never stop to the listeners by giving them good example such as certain situations in her life. she made the connection between the speaker and the audiences, and encouraged them to consider things her mentioned in her show.

For the second speaker or Prumsodun, he spoke fluently, used body language, and used a good tome of voice to make his story of Khmer ancient dance become more meaningful. Interestingly, he interacted with the audiences by asking questions related to their lives. This way made the listeners feel that his story was somehow connected to them, then they will definitely pay more attention in his show.

“First give, then receive”, a quote from the owner of Khao Man Gai food truck, Nong Poonsukwattana. She has segregated each path of her life experience into short sentences that the word choice and vocabulary could be understood by a one-time hearing. The tone and mood delivered to the audience fluctuated as the chapter of her life story changed. The way she expressed her speech was conspicuously different from those prepared speeches. She has clearly said it all from the bottom of her heart.

Prumsodun, on the other hand, provided his talk in-depth, thoroughly dug down from the historical talk of where it started up until today’s era. The given examples and movements mentioned in the video were excellently laid out and helpful. Among other things, the way he casually attracted the crowd by making connections between the audience's features and his philosophy of life was incredibly smooth.

The first speaker was Mrs. Poonsukwattana. She came out to talk about the experiences that creat her to be her in the current version. The main point of this talk show is about how she manages to overcome fear: speaking in an unfamiliar language. Although it sounds not smooth and clear, the tone and feeling that come out of her eyes can make the audience feel her. Also, the voice that came out from her mount sound shaking, yet that shows how brave she is, whatever it is her personal story, she wants to share out to encourage other people can do like her. Before the end of the show, she tries to tell everyone to trust in themselves no matter how hard is it, just do it.

In the second talk show by Mr. Prumsodun OK talks about the Khmer dance. He came out to talk in front of the audience with a soft voice and calm action. For most of the show, he showed the example of the meant of each dance. And he did it well. He shows his emotion on the stage and released his emotion from his voice and sound, it makes the audience want to follow his story. With all of this explanation, this show sounds interesting and very new to me.

Nong Poonsukwattana greatly grab the audience's attention by her expression, body language, and well-arrange storyline. Her expression and body language she show along her speech make the audience feel that she is approachable. She show sincerity and
ambitious, attach the listener to her story. She openly express her emotion. She slowly introduce herself and insert some funny experience. She put tension in the important part. The storyline was not confusing. It was simple and easy to understand. Also, how she can overcome her nervousness and fear is major reason I would consider her as a good speaker. She delivered an inspire and interesting speech even-though she did not speak fluently like native.--Her speech is relevant to wider audience because it inspire, easy to understand, and applicable.

Prumsodun Ok clearly illustrate his speech using different gesture. He has good eye contact with the audience. He let the audience involve during his speech. His word-choice is gorgeous. He cleverly compare his topic with ordinary things. His voice-tone embrace the speech to be even more interesting. -- His chosen topic is already interesting by its own. It is new and attractive.

How do we know whether or not these speakers are effective? I believe passion is what makes their them effective, although these are personal speeches from my observation it is crystal clear that their is passion within their speech.

Nong Poonskwattana was a very down to earth speaker her speech wasn't something flashy or deemed too much she started of with her background and continued on from when she reached the US. Even though she struggled to speak throughout the video she was still confident enough to keep on going, by making sure to add some humor into her speech it kept the audience active enough and thus helped her speech moved on. As her speech kept on going it became more interesting as she mentions that she isn't special like others, this made her speech became more interesting because we can see that she had to overcome many issues whether it be being hired or whether it was family support or anything, she was still able to overcome them and was able to strive towards her goal. By ending her speech with a quote is something that is common, yet effective because it creates a question in a way for the audience to think about even after her time is up. (during her final 30 seconds for some reason I got goosebumps from listening to her speech)

Prumsodun OK, first of all whether it was his tone, language, or his voice it definitely grab the audiences attention because it was very fluent and easy to understand what he was saying. His speech was very informative about his cultural background of khmer, it felt more like a class rather than a speech because of how he was interacting with his audience, because of this topic is very unfamiliar the audience all seemed to be intrigued about this cultural dance of khmer in which we can see from the video that the audience was following some of his hand gestures as he was explaining about them, one that is noticeable is the cycle of life. His interaction with the audience was the key to achieving a effective speech in my opinion, as he tells the audience to stand up he was able to grab their attention and ask them questions this helps create more interaction. Overall he was able to influence this classical dance and was also able to attract more appreciation for this classical khmer dance too.

For the first speaker, Nong Poonsukwattana, she talked about her life in general and what brought her here through out her experiences. She delivered her speech by pouring her emotions for her entire speech. She gave out the speech with excitement especially when she talked about her life difficulties that she faced. She said it with the most sincere words to the audiences while she talked about her experiences throughout her journey in America to connect to the listeners. Her experiences that she has been through a lot of obstacles keep the audience to listening to it. The inspiration that she said about her life is what relevant to the wider audience in order to keep trying their best.

For the second speaker, Prumsodunk Ok, he talked about his dance traditions that was about to be abandoned by a lot of his own people and country. His tone of voice that he used was being calm during his speech because he talked about the beauty of the dance. He used his experience of being a dancer to a former of dance company to express his culture and spread it to others. He encouraged the audiences to repeat after his movement to feel the connected of the art like emotions and activities. Not only, he raised the awareness of the audience by comparing basic things in life that most of the audiences have experienced it, but he also involved the audience in his activity to explain the situations he was about to say. The interactions between the audience and the speaker is what make it more understanding.

It is glaringly obvious that the first speaker, Nong Poonsukwattana, doesn't have perfect English but, this isn't an obstacle at all for her and continues to deliver her speech with confidence throughout. One way that she does this is by maintaining the consistency in her pacing of her speech and constantly taking deep breaths when she needs to. Some topic that she brings up definitely is very hard for her to talk about but, she takes her time and is able to talk about it freely. One way she also helps eases her nerves is incorporating humour into her speech to help lighten the mood and in doing so, also engages the audience even further as some of the things she jokes about is relatable to many people.

Moving on, the second speaker, Prumsodun Ok, has a very different style in his speech and the way he delivers it. He has a very beautiful and easy to understand tone in his voice and uses sophisticated diction to add on to the image that he is trying to portray to the audience in his speech. His speech is also very beautiful in the fact that not only does he carefully choose his words and says it in a very eloquent manner, he incorporates traditional body movements and classical dance when he is speaking. Not only does this engage the audience, this also gives them an idea of who he really is as a person and where he comes from. Another way he engages with the audience is by asking them questions and making them stand if it relates to them. Throughout his story telling, we learn many things that we may not know about the history of where he comes from and it is really hard not to pay attention because he does it so beautifully.

The first speech (The speaker is Nong Poonsukwatana). She is very confident for talking in front audiences, and she can also conveys to speak well. When she told on the sadness story, she can make me to understand her emotion. Although her accent may not be fluency as much, I think that she pronounce the words well. Plus, she is able to compose various projects correctly, and she use the correct tense. From the beginning until the end of the lecture, her speech is always constant that she does not have any shy gestures or dead air during the speech.

The second speech (The speaker is Prumsodun Ok). His speech have a lot of information, and he can tell the audiences completely with the clam tone according to the story (The Khmer dance) that he present to them. Plus, he has been given audiences to dance, so this means his speech can make people feel compelled. In my opinion, the voice and tone of his speech is very good, his accent is really great.

  33. The speech given by Long Poonsukwattana entitled ‘First give, then receive’ talks about real life experience the speaker has faced-growing up in an unstable family and then moving to the us where through up and down of her journey it lead her to where she is a business owner of a Chicken rice shop. The speaker is a Thai lady with a slight accent and she is an independent women who have experienced hardships as well as learnt from it to grow and become successful. She presents herself as a nobody at first explaining the kind of situation she was in, but throughout her story she continues to paint a picture of an inspirational motivation for other who are listening. Her speech is effective when she is able to provoke people’s emotions by her tone of voice making it sound sad; her humor and skills to draw attention to her successes. It could impact a wide range of audience by the way she portrait herself to be a no one to become someone who is a successful person. The story is inspiring and her message carries weight as her experiences support her claims.

The speech by Prumsodun Ok is about Khmer dance. The speaker talks about the history and relates it back to the present. This speaker is half khmer and half American whose gender is gay. His speech is effective because with his topic, he was using his body language and demonstrating the dance in a pace where it was understandable. Not only he showed but he explained and engage the audience to interact with him which made the experience more colorful. He was able to allow the audience to think as if they were khmer which allow them to have a deeper understanding in the perspective of his speech.

First give, then receive a speech by Nong Poonsukwattana.
I feel delighted with Nong that she is very successful right now. “ No matter how bad the situation you’re in. Believe in yourselves, believe that you can do it, and more importantly, do it.” “Make it big.” Nong Poonsukwattana comes full of energy and spirit on the stage, encouraging and inspiring people who struggle with bad situations to keep fighting. In the video, she firstly talks about her family. While she was speaking, every word that she expressed came from her true feelings. For me, it is not easy to tell my personal information to audiences that I have never known. She talked fluently with a full of sincere voice even though English is not her language. Her communication is so good. She explains a lot of details about each of her experiences before and after becoming an entrepreneur. She uses a lot of body language. For example, she keeps moving her hands to be less nervous.

The magic of Khmer classical dance a speech by Prumsodun Ok
His speech is about the history of Khmer’s classical dance. He uses a beautiful voice tone to make the audiences feel that the classical dance is magical and easier to understand since it is about his own culture. He communicates fluently with full confidence. Moreover, he demonstrates some dances and hand gestures to make audiences go along with his speech. He prepared the information very well. He also talked about how Cambodian treat Khmer’s classical dance in the past. He concludes his speech by saying that beauty is not for one type or group, but everyone has their beauty. They are born to be what they are.

    Nong Poonsukwatthana.

From my personal perspective, she explained her struggles with determination and confidence. The audience can get her inspiration from her simply through simple speech. Her speech was not perfect as grammar, but I easily understood how she expressed herself. Honesty from her eyes can tell that she really has a very strong heart and determination. Her feelings were transmitted through the eyes, giving the audience a clear and compelling sense of the speaker's feelings. Her jokes and humor make viewers less boring and fluid to reach the story. Her tone of voice is powerful from the sensations of the spoken sentences. She is confident and has consciousness, although the story is much heavy for her. Her story is not easy to tell, but she was a smart speaker who had filtered conciseness and easy-to understand .

    Prumsodun Ok
This is a wonderful melodious clip that I have watched from Ted so far, I am very proud of him, proud to be in Cambodian ten minutes, his words are very meaningful. It gives the depth and beauty of Khmer dance. The way he talks is very relaxing. I found that his voice and movement were quite profound and powerful. His dance moves, expressions and messages are conveyed with a sharp mind. This man was very courageous to show off his own culture, identity and craftsmanship. He explained sadly How can we not realize the importance of nurturing and supporting artists in the science / technology community? However, I found it a little boring, like listening to knowledge in the classroom. Sometimes, his voice may make people fall asleep at the same time.

From my perspective, Nong Poonsukwatana’s speech is really impressive for me. I would admit that her influent English is quite hard for everyone to understand the story she told. However, by her interesting background plus her performance on the stage, this could make everybody in the hall seem to be happy and have fun with her speech. A sole girl who has no opportunities on any job applications to whom someone called her as a chef is an extraordinary line for the talk. Also, her hand sign and body language may assist audiences to understand easier.

Prumsodun Ok is the second speaker of this. Because of his occupation as a performer of Khmer dance, he might be accustomed to facing a lot of people himself. His expression is full of detail, and he can inform the audience everything they need to know about the Khmer dance perfectly. Also, his voice and tone of voice are excellent, and his dynamic speaking has dramatically affected the speech to be more fluent. Furthermore, he is also an instructor to audiences about the dance, so his demonstration has the potential to make people feel inspired and interested in the story.

As for Nong speech, she gives a good speech as she draws the audience's attention by using facial expression as well as body gesture. Most importantly, she selects good parts of her story to tell and gives relevance to the audience such as famous tv show, quotes, and emotional stories. Emotional stories and stories of succession are always the one that draw attention and want to be heard.

With the regard to Prumsodun speech, I personally think that he has very soothing voice which is very pleasant to an ears. He delivered a very effective speech by using body language and asking the audience for their engagement. He also introduce himself through history which creates impactful effect.

First give, then receive: Nong Poonsukwattana

Despite not being the best in English, Nong Poonsukwattana proved to everyone that one does not have to master a language to speak on stage. Nong’s confidence to stand on stage is admirable. She shares her story with overflowing confidence and isn’t embarrassed of anything about herself. She knows she’s not perfect and embraces that fact about herself. Her ability to express herself and evoke emotions in her audience is what makes her an effective speaker. Her pronunciation did not prevent her from getting her message across. In addition to that, her inspirational story reaches out to her audience, giving them hope when they are lost. As she said, no matter how bad things get, there will be better days.

    Prumsodun Ok

Prumsodun Ok shows us a well-planned speech. Not only does his speech has his audience engage with him, but it also has the history of the Khmer dance which allows him to explain its significance both to him and his people. By letting his audience follow his actions when he was demonstrating the “cycle of life”, the activity kept them focused on him. Moreover, the dance moves he demonstrated after were just pure gold. One could tell from one look that it takes hard work and patience to be able to dance that well and leave people in awe. It was beautiful. So very beautiful. Prumsodun has a very soothing voice, which is easy to listen to. He was calm throughout the whole speech and knew when and where to emphasize his words and actions. This tells us that he has excellent control of his stage and everyone is bound to fall for his magic.

"First give, then receive" by Nong Poonsukwattana
From her speech, she looks so delighted to be centered in the middle of American people(her heroes) as she has been watching American movies. Consequently, she can open up her restaurant in the USA. In the beginning, she expressed her feeling throughout all the hardships she had when she was in Thailand. Because her dad was abusing her family so she move across the world to the USA. Even though this is a speech about herself, I could see the effectiveness of this speech and the relationship between audiences. Because she were talking about her journey that start with almost zero to become a successful Thai entrepreneur in the country across her home town. BY telling her story might help the audiences come up with the good ideas because her story is very encouraging people.

The second speech is spoken by Prumsodun OK.
He was talking about the Khmer classical dance, which is a transformation from nature into hand movement. He also provide four gestures of hand movement that create a language to express themselves. He speaks fluently and sometimes has interaction with the audiences.

As for Nong Poonsukwattana’s speech, she has shown extreme enthusiasm since her first step on the stage. This differentiates her from other TED speakers, which provides her an attentive audience. About 1 minute in, I have realised her incompetence in speaking English fluently when compared to a native English speaker. Despite some grammatical errors, slurred speech and nervous body language, I would still say that the message is not in the least distorted, but successfully received. Her strong intonation, expressions and self-confidence without a doubt overtake the apparent language barriers. Moreover, the content she has selected in presenting her journey is incredibly well chosen and precise, which has captivated the audience's attention through out the whole speech.

As for Prumsodun Ok’s speech, he expresses himself with confidence and tranquility. There seems to be no stuttering or any disruptions in the flow of his speech, which suggests how prepared and skilled he is in public speaking. He incorporates descriptive languages in the speech, performs his form of art and interacts with audience members during the presentation, which are interesting approaches for the audience to connect with his personal journey in a more relatable perspective. However, as opposed to Nong Poonsukwattana’s speech, his speech is quite monotonous. Therefore, although the speech is perfectly spoken with great enunciation, it may appear as relatively uninteresting.

The first speech by Nong Poonsukwatta was astonishing to see. It was very obvious that she was very nervous to be on stage from how shaky her voice and how she keep avoiding meeting the audiences gazes at the start. Unlike the nervousness she may have felt, she seem to be filled with confidence. She was confident to joke around and connected to audience by giving relevance to them. By sharing her difficult background of suffering from abuses, not be able to speak English, and being a failed entrepreneur. This made her speeches to be exceptional effective. Her ability to speak wittily and the emotion that she put into her speech made it very charming and made the audience sympathize with her. Therefore making the speech exceptional effective.

The second speech by Prumsodun OK was well-organized, powerful, and very captivating. He spoke in a soft clear voice, but each words that came out were powerful and meaningful. The choices of words he used to give information about history of Cambodia to the languages and culture of Khmer helped create clear imagery in the audiences and my mind. Even though his voice may be soft, it wasn't boring at all. The intonation, and the feelings he inserted into his speech was memorable. He showed example of Khmer dance and let the audiences try allowing the audiences to know that it's difficult to get to the level of Mr. Prumsodun OK. All of these allow the audiences to understand more of him and his perspective.

    Nong Poonsukwattana

First of all, I have to say that as watching and listening to Nong Poonsukwattan's speech, I felt that she was super cool dealing with her excitement. I was able to see from the very beginning until the end that she was very exciting, giving the speech on Ted Portland in front of hundreds of foreigners. Moreover, I also felt that she was very brave to be able to truly tell her own story in the public. It is clear that one of the best ways for people to get inspiration is to listen to a story from one who already succeeded. Lastly, I really enjoy listening to her story.

    Prumsodun Ok

For this speech, I found it a little bit more serious, maybe because of the topic he was talking about, his tone, and his posture. I like the way he spoke out of confidence which shows that he knows what he was talking about. He also interacted with the audiences which I think is very interesting. I felt that he know how to get attention from the audience and also how to avoid boredom while giving the speech.

    First Speaker (Nong Poonsukwattana)
Despite the difficulties of English as her second language, Nong Poonsukwattana has done a great job of capturing audiences' attention and message delivery. She started with her tragic background which is the start of whom she became as a person. She connected her childhood memory and deliver it sensationally that the audiences can relate emotionally and stay connected to her speech. It gave inspiration to audiences about believing in yourself. The confidence she had on the stage is what it sets her apart. Even though her English is not strong, but she made up with the enthusiasm and the audience can feel that she is trying her best on the stage to give out this Ted Talk, which made the lesson she was giving more depth and interesting.

    Second Speaker (Prumsodun Ok)
He started with the background of Khmer classical dance and a short history of Khmer Rouge and how these two are related to specifying the topics that he will talk about. This Khmer form of art reminds me of traditional Thai dance, which should be quite obvious since the two countries are a neighbor and should share some similar traditions. One of the keys for him to make his speech effective was through the use of calm and soft-spoken alongside with flows of movements voice as a tool to capture audiences' attention. The synchronizing of the voice and movement made the story flow better and gave a harmonious feeling to the audiences alike they are listening to a fairy tale. Another key is the interaction with the audiences for the audiences to relate and understand what he was trying to present. For example, he asked the audience to do hand gestures or ask the audience to stand up if they can relate to the things he mentioned, which made his speech effective and connect to various audiences.

For Nong Poonsukwatthana speech, I found that she has a strong courage to express her story in the past with her second language. While she is speaking, she show her brave by talking without anxiety. She also tells us that in order to be a good entrepreneur, we must gather informations as much as you can and making good service for customers.

The speech from Prumsodun Ok is about the art of Khmer classical dance. He provided the story of this art show and explained the connection between Khmer classical dance and real life later on. His voice and tone are perfectly used in the speech. In my opinion, I think that the way he speaks and studying in the classroom are likely the same so it could be boring for me sometimes. However, there are some interactions between Prusodun and audiences by asking the audiences to do four hand gestures along with him. Lastly, he concluded his speech by sharing Chheng Phon words "a garden with only one type with flower is no good ". It is a couraging message as everything does have values in itself.

After watching Nong Poonsukwattana’s speech about "First give, then receive", from my perspective, she tried to encourage and inspire the audience to have self-believed and brave. It can clearly be seen that she does not speak English fluently, however, her facial expressions and body language delivered her emotions to the listeners. There are feeling and power expressions through her words and this is the particular reason of the audiences attentions. Even though her life story is contained with sadness, several kinds of jokes that she made enabled to encourage the audiences. To sum up, she indicated her confidence even though the story is hard for her to express but she has ability to deliver it to the audiences to understand easily.

Another video that I watched is a speech from Prumsodun Ok. His speech was organized well and contained with powerful. Moreover, his speech can be powerful even he used calm and smooth voice. Several gestures and the movements of his body can help the listeners to visualize the speech. Another effective way to keep his audiences attentions is the interactions. To clarify, he encouraged his audiences to stand up and then ask questions, moreover, he also asked them to dance which is an interesting technique to keep his audiences engagement.

For the first speech by Nong Poonsukawatthana, she did a great job attach the audience by using facial expression and body language to help her express how she felt at a time. Moreover, I can feel that she tries to pronounce every word clearly and naturally so the listener can follow along even though her English is not fluent. Although her story could make the audience feel depressed, she adds some joke and always smile to make audience and herself become more relaxed. By the end of the speech, she shows everyone that no matter how far your goal is you can achieve it, just believe in yourself and start doing it.

In the second speech by Prumsodun OK, I can tell immediately that he is a great speaker by his tone, voice, and especially his body language. When he talks, he has a very smooth and unique rhythm in his words, this makes the audience easily understand what he wants to explain to them even the topic is quite complex. He tries to let the listener imagine what "Khmer dance" looks like first, and then also showing them what it looks like so the listener will know if they visualize it correctly or not. Furthermore, He makes the audience become a part of his speech by persuading them to do a part of Khmer dance, so he can confirm that the audience will pay attention to him.

The first TED talk by Ms. Nong Poonsukawatthana was delivered well throughout her speech. When speaking in front of an audience one of the factors that is essential to delivering a good speech is confidence. She walks onto the spotlight presenting herself genuinely and brightly. Her demeanor throughout the speech was consistent and correlated with her emotion. Audiences were able to latch onto her story as she connected with them with American culture references and anecdotes all from her perspective. Audiences were intrigued with her speech because she included them by telling her story in a place most audiences were from. Even though English is not her first language, she did her best to deliver her story in a moderate pace with sheer confidence.

For the second TED talk speech delivered by Mr. Prumsodun Ok was also delivered well. He delivers his speech straight to the point with also giving a brief history of what he does. His body language is more calm and delivered with a constant floe with little to pauses. As he speaks his body language also provides visual support for the audience. This can be seen well as he explains the body movement of emotion through his art of dance. When he explains positive emotion his movement is calm, but when anger is displayed there is an indication of aggressive movement when he stomped on the ground. He draws in the audience with his calm demeanor and also by looking at audience at different sides which makes audiences feel included. To make them feel included he also allows them to participate when asked to follow the four gestures in dance and also when asked a general question. From the rhythm of his speech, the clear delivery of each word, to his calm body language allows his speech to be impactful. He does not give any sign of nervousness or move erratically. Every movement he makes has a purpose and every time he speaks or makes a point he allows the audience to take in what he says by pausing every now when then.

For the first speaker, Nong poonsukwattana, she begins the speech quite well, by introducing herself and making audiences laugh at what she says to catch audiences’ attention. Then, she ends the introduction by stating why she is here on the stage today. First, for her skills, she speaks loudly and clearly with rhythm. Her speech awaken the audience's empathy, is highly touching and engaging. Altogether, these attract the audience to continue to attentively listen to what she’s saying or going to say next. Although she speaks with Thai pronunciation, imperfect grammar, and also continually gets stuck in many parts due to the fact that she’s about to cry and forget what she’s prepared to say, she’s still able to carry on her speech until the end. Nevertheless, her gestures and manner such as pointing finger at audiences or how she stands does not seem to be polite and professional.

On the other hand, for the second speaker, Prumsodun. He prepared for his speech very well. He can clearly explain Khmer's cultural background and Khmer’s dance posture by his formal words and practical postures. However, he immediately starts with the content but not introduces himself, say any catching introduction or the overall purpose of the speech. This makes me wonder why he’s talking about what he’s talking about. For his skill, he has a very good pronunciation(similar to native speakers’) ; he does polite gestures; he speaks clearly with rhythm and flawless grammar. He's also able to speak successively without getting stuck, which evidently can be told that he prepared for the speech quite well.. However, it seems to be overly prepared and not spontaneous. Not only for how he speaks but also for the non-verbal skills such as the way he turns his head. The fact that he’s overly prepared makes the speech somewhat boring in my opinion. Nonetheless, he makes audiences involved to keep them attracted with his speech by telling them to follow what he says.

Nong Poonsukwattana, the first speaker. Her speech is quite effective because she talks about her own experience how she become entrepreneur in United state without any english communication skill like she starts from zero. she begins with her background that she has abusive father who makes her want to live far away to explain her first struggle. When she's speaking, she uses all of her body languages, shaking voice to make people has feeling involved with this speech and have jokes sometimes to keep catching audience's attention. Although she's not fluent but she does try her best to deliver the message to encourage people to believe in themselves

for the second speaker, Prumsodun looks more professional as it can be seen by his standing position and body gestures and calming voice talking about his national culture, Khmer's dance. also the rhythm and smooth speeches without any stuck make audience listen to it easier but with his calmingg voice might make this boring. To solve that problem, he use gesture as a dance move to make people interested. Overall, this speech is also effective to make people know more about his culture

The first speaker is not fully fluent in English but she is confident. She moves around a lot. She also seems nervous talking to the audience, the shakiness in her voice indicates that she is nervous/emotional when talking. There are some parts that seems like she forgot what she was going to say, she takes a couple of second to think about what to say next. She is also trying to pronounce everything as clear as possible, I think this is because she had a hard time getting people to understand her, she maybe talks like that to make it as easy as possible to understand. She also brought some objects to talk about, although short, It shows some of her personality.

The second speaker looks like he is already used to speaking publicly, he is very calm and speaks in a quiet voice. His English is very easy to understand, his voice and how he moves around is calming and gentle similar to Khmer classical dance where they are no sudden movements or yelling. He shows the Khmer classical dance, an ancient art form. He does not move around much. He is embracing the attention. he interacts with the audience by speaking to them directly. At the end, he talks about how people in Khmer are living hard lives, he is trying to brings awareness to how many people in Khmer is still suffering in Poverty.
